The Bunny Shed

The Shed

The bunnies live in a 7'x5' shed at the bottom of the garden, with access to a 3'x6' run at all times. If one of us is at home then we will open the run so that they have full access to the garden. The garden is fully bunnyproofed so they can't escape:

Access to the run is via an old industrial heating pipe that I managed to scrounge from work:

Inside the shed floor is covered with hardboard, then lino for easy cleaning. The "hutch" is custom built inside and gives the buns a good amount of room and several levels to climb around.

All the panels are removable for easy cleaning, including the middle step. This was the biggest lesson I learned from having made a few previous stand alone hutches for the house: Take the time now to do things right, and you will save so much time later. The easy access and lino covering makes cleaning a doddle. Here is the hutch with all the covers removed (but not the step):

Since the earlier photos I have now insulated the shed with 1 inch expanded polystryene ready for the winter. It is covered with hardboard in the areas that the buns have access to so that they don't eat it. Power is supplied to the shed via plastic conduit and enters at the rear of the shed to provide light and heat.

Power for the cameras is supplied as a separate 9v supply and runs in the same conduit as the video leads

Insulation

Heat is provided by a greenhouse heater that keeps the shed at a comfortable 5 degrees during the very cold nights. For nights when it's not worth keeping the heat on, the buns have two Snugglesafe Heat Pads to keep them warm:

The top floor comprises the bedroom area and the feeding area. The bedroom is further insulated with bubblewrap between the outer hardboard skins, but the buns so rarely used the bedroom that I took the front wall out to give them more room at feeding time.

Hay and water are provided on the ground floor, along with the litter tray. Originally I had planned on having the litter tray on the top floor in it's own special compartement, but obviously the buns knew better and promptly decided that below the hay rack was where they were going to go (Should have seen that one coming!).

In the next picture you can see what areas the cameras cover. Camera 1 is on the top floor just about the entrance hole, camera 2 covers the step and main area, and camera 3 covers the entrance tunnel.
